Tanja Rochelmeyer
(Germany, b. 1975)

Tanja Rochelmeyer graduated from the Berlin University of Applied Sciences and currently lives in Berlin, Germany. Many of her creations draw inspiration from her engineering background, emphasizing attention to detail and mathematical precision. However, calculations are not the medium of creation but an intermediate step in the creative process. Her training as an engineer has contributed to a perfectionist approach to technology, creating a sharp contrast with the moments of image creation. Ultimately, she positions herself and the subject of her creation within this contrast. "Constructivism and futurism meet the latest architecture and merge into a new language of modern painting." Tanja Rochelmeyer creates maze-like, dispersed spatial configurations, introducing multiple perspectives into the concept of imagery.

Tanja Rochelmeyer's work began with black and white abstract paintings with architectural and landscape depictions. Driven by curiosity about spatial perception, Rochelmeyer gradually transformed flat paintings, experimenting with three-dimensional sculptural installations or relief forms. She translated the perspective, spatial intersections, rotations, and compressions in her paintings into sculptures made of individual pieces of acrylic glass collage. She wanted to explore the spaces between the gaps in her paintings, open them up, and investigate them, ultimately giving shape to the intermediate spaces that are not visible in two-dimensional images. The compression, stretching, and bold directional shifts of blocks on a two-dimensional surface are transformed into soft, streamlined colored transparent acrylics, creating a visual pattern of space. With the introduction of color elements, a sense of optical illusion in space is added. The relief series enlarges and overlaps specific details of her paintings and frames them. These works can be described as a visual pattern of space, including vocabulary for angles and trajectories. Monochromatic blocks penetrate and soak into different areas with powerful tension, guiding the viewer towards deeper perspectives.
