'Experience the spirit of a horse' series continues the approach of the Leaving Arcadia (Chu Taoyuan) series, using collage to disrupt traditional landscape spatiality. This series incorporates more classical literati garden imagery, such as ancient pines and scholar's stones. The horse, as the central subject, reflects the literati sentiment that "only with a Bole [a legendary judge of horses] can a thousand-li steed be recognized."
The artist utilizes multi-layered collages of traditional ink art materials, including coarse silk, Xuan paper, metal foil, and mineral azurite. The inclusion of Mizige (calligraphy practice paper) serves as an interpretation of the standardized upbringing of the "90s generation," as well as an understanding of the fragmented classical literati spirit within modern civilization. Together with the image of the horse, these materials reconstruct the allusion of "Bole judging horses," advancing a multi-layered narrative through the technique of pictorial collage.
About the Artist

Li Liangchen
(China, b.1997)
PhD Candidate in Fine Arts and Calligraphy, China Academy of Art. Based in Beijing. As a post-90s artist bridging traditional paper-based media and the digital age, Li Liangchen seeks to embed contemporary emotions and reflections within the classical framework of silk and mineral pigments. Drawing on the ancient tradition of blue-and-green landscape painting, he uses color and composition to express human alienation and longing in the digital era. Through the “blue-and-green” filter, he reexamines his relationship with nature, tradition, and a rapidly changing world. His works have been exhibited at Today Art Museum, National Art Museum of China, and He Art Museum, and are included in the collections of Beijing Shu Art Museum and the China Art Museum Association.
