Caro Jost
(German, b. 1965)

慕尼黑大學法律學院及慕尼黑藝術學院畢業,現居住及創作於慕尼黑。每個藝術家都有自己喜歡的藝術家,然而將這種鍾愛在自己的作品中表露無遺的,就是來自德國慕尼黑的藝術家 Caro Jost,長期追溯以慕尼黑為大本營的抽象表現主義為主題創作。她的創作關於時間、空間及事件,另一成名系列Streetprints,造訪全球超過70個地點,將在街頭採集的痕跡烙印在畫布上。作品曾在紐約MoMA、紐約 Chelsea Art Museum、威尼斯 Guggenheim Collection等機構展出、並獲MoMA Library collection (The archives of MoMA, NY) 、Chelsea Art Museum (NY) 、Museum of the City of Munich等多間國際重要藝術機構永久收藏。

藝術上的 Appropriation 挪用,是適當地使用既有存在的物件及圖像,借用它、 採用它做出意義上的轉化,挪用的開端及翹楚是 Marcel Duchamp 使用 readymades 現成物的概念,僅透過選擇工業產品及展示的過程來傳達藝術意 義。自此之後,達達主義(Dada) Robert Rauschenberg 等藝術家都採用了非傳 統的材料納入自己的作品。進到 1990 年代後的數位時代,不斷蛻變與進化的科 技更讓藝術挪用的方式更加擴展,各式各樣的訊息、媒體都可以成為作品的一部分。

不使用畫筆或畫架,也不將攝影幻覺轉為現實,而從街道上尋找主題,Jost耗時數年完成的知名紀錄片作品Final traces of abstract expressionists,她追溯時代,像偵探般追蹤著前輩抽象表現主義藝術家的創作軌跡造訪工作室並會面熟識藝術家的親屬及友人,走過藝術家取材的街道、公寓、會議場所、酒吧及展覽空間,所有的素材,關於逝去的藝術家,然而藝術仍在發展。抽象表現主義不以描繪具象為目標,而是透過點、線、面、色彩、形體、構圖來傳達各種情緒,沒有具象畫面,但紐約這個城市卻處處殘留著他們的足跡。當Hans Hoffman、Jackson Pollock、Mark Rothko等藝術家著正裝,在鏡頭前留下合照,在紐約各地的建築空間中留下他們的精神意志,在厚厚的剪貼紀錄本中,地上的痕跡烙印在畫布上,最後Caro Jost 站在Barnett Newman曾經駐足的地點 ,慢慢退後卻變成了自己作品中的人物,是一首穿越過去與現在時間交織的詩歌。

另一著名系列 ─ Invoice Painting ,Caro Jost 也蒐集藝術家在某個特定時間點創作時使用的檔案,像是筆記手稿、 購買顏料的收據副本,挪用於畫布上再創作出屬於她的藝術,像是 Invoice painting B.N. February 8, 1956,Sketch G.M. March 15 1922 (detail red, yellow and blue),Notes W.K. 1909 blue 等作品系列。這些材料購買的副本紀錄了現代重要藝術品的近期起源,Jost 將它們化作創作的一部分。如康丁斯基居住慕尼黑時期的作品是以色彩為主導的浪漫概念,強調從物質主義中甦醒,讓觀看者被一陣陣厚彩的浪潮包圍;Jost 則是一點一點地在模糊、不清晰的文本中,含蓄地分析這些色彩組成,重現 The Blue Rider浪潮的浪漫色彩靈魂在作品上。Jost 獨特的創作概念及形式受到重要藝術家認同並獲得藝術家基金會支持提供珍貴手稿如 The Barnett Newman Foundation, Gabriele Münter Foundation, Günther Uecker…等, 創作計畫具發展潛力。

Caro Jost 獨特的創作手法,使用「行動」即「藝術」直接的方式,表達一種自 我發現的世界觀,並將時間、痕跡、行動具體化,存在於連續時空的美學物件裡。 在多年的創作生涯中,她創造出許多著名、經典的系列。其中,其成名系列 Streetprints,造訪全球超過 70 個地點,將在街頭採集的痕 跡烙印在畫布上。藝術層層疊疊不斷建構在過去的歷史上,Caro Jost從藝術史中探尋過往藝術家 的故事,挪用他們最原始的文本、親自抵達原始的時空場域,輸入素材、轉化、重新編碼,直接用新的形式輸出,她向卓越的藝術成就致敬,並將精神性融入到自己的藝術作品中。使用「行動」即「藝術」的直接方式,表達一種自我發現的世界觀。一件件的作品像是無法被消去的副本,Jost將時間、痕跡、行動具體化,挪用,卻帶入一份愛意,存在於連續時空的美學物件裡。2019 年 Jost 發展最新 Public Paintings ‘Walk the Talk’ 系列,她將 2001 年於紐約街頭蒐集到的活動傳單,於 2019 年重新檢視並將紙張上部分文字內容 強調、抹除,不受時空背景限制,持續將此精神延續至發展成熟以及新創的主題系列當中。
