Basil Kincaid
(USA, b.1986)

Basil Kincaid 毕业於科罗拉多学院(Colorado College),创作媒材涵盖絎缝、拼贴艺术、装置艺术、摄影及表演艺术。曾获选参与美国Arts Connect International 驻村计画,甫於2018年与国际知名的当代艺术收藏机构之一摩根大通艺术典藏机构(JP Morgan Chase Art Collection)合作首届「Art At Work Live」计画,由银行职员提供家中服装布料,Kincaid 再加以絎缝、拼贴创作为最足以代表全公司职员的特别「肖像画」,尔后Kincaid 三件作品获该艺术机构收藏。

「絎缝工艺」(quilting)对Kincaid 而言是具家族传承意义的,早在100多年前他来自西非的家族成员便开始著手絎缝,这份歷史意义促发他以当代艺术创作形式与传统絎缝技法结合,如艺术家所言,有如赋予「祖先的力量」。Kincaid 从身为移民后代的个人经验出发,转而在作品中注入更多非裔移民在歷史裡所经歷的创伤与流离失所,及对於当代种族议题的关注,也将其视为一种自我疗癒或自我解放的探索过程。Kincaid 被视为是为「再造」艺术家,他从所收集的材料中汲取艺术,透过了解不同文化的当地传统、地理与多元文化遗產,与当地的艺术家或工匠合作,有意识地将艺术与身份认同、社区意识结合。透过絎缝,也建构起Kincaid 作为一位非裔美国人的个人自我认同与文化价值。
