Adrian Wald
(
Germany, b.1986)

Adrian Wald (Germany, b.1986) was born in Bavaria, Germany, currently lives and works in Munich. He studied graphic painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the Ecole Mediterraneo des Arts in Marseille, France. In Wald's creative field, there is no clear boundary between "sculpture" and "painting", installation works that combine sculpture and painting are the main forms of creation. He deconstructs objects and embodies the concept of "breaking the way or order of viewing paintings" through his works. Wald has been selected to participate in the artist-in-residence program in Riedenburg, Germany many times, and has received grants from the Bavarian Ministry of Arts and Culture.

Wald likes to explore different materials. He believes that there is no absolute suitable medium for painting. He can create fine linen or cheap yellowed cotton canvas, rabbit skin glue, linseed oil, thick paint, wedges, clamps, brushes, etc. media. He deconstructs objects and embodies the concept of "breaking the way or order of viewing in paintings" through his works. Wood strips and canvas are often used to form the back of traditional paintings, leaving a blank space in the center and inverting the front and back; for example, in the "Heavy paint" series, the painting surface is made into a pillow-like soft shape, allowing the heavy paint to become The shaping medium leaves deep or shallow indentations on the soft linen fabric, giving weight to light things and softness to hard things, thus challenging the viewer's established perception of canvas. The result is a "Würfelbild" (German for cube painting), making his work more like a sculpture than a painting.

Wald's works, while seemingly minimalistic, overturn the common perception of "simplicity" in minimalism, as the artist himself states: "I both respect and detest the classic geometric forms of modernity." Chaos and disorder are often juxtaposed with his minimalistic pieces. Presented in geometric forms, his works allow viewers to deeply feel the authenticity and materiality presented through unique media, keeping them in a perpetual state of curiosity.
