On November 2, under a clear blue sky, “Ruprecht von Kaufmann: Der Weisse Wal” officially opened at Bluerider ART Shanghai · The Bund. This marks Kaufmann’s debut solo exhibition in Asia and our first internationally represented artist attended at Bluerider ART Shanghai Opening Ceremony since its opening in 2021. Art enthusiasts from Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Nanjing, and Hangzhou gathered at the gallery to meet the artist in person. Elsa Wang, founder of Bluerider ART, introduced the German artist’s latest works by quoting Captain Ahab from the literary masterpiece Moby Dick: “I do not fight a whale, but challenge the unfairness of fate. " Kaufmann shared his inspiration behind the theme of “Moby Dick” highlighting its connection to Shanghai as an international port. He explained: “These works do not depict scenes from the novel but instead explore their parallels with our contemporary condition. The 3.6-meter triptych 'Der Weisse Wal" painting reflects the captain’s obsession with the white whale, mirroring humanity’s relentless pursuit of wealth, desire, and ambition. Only within the gallery space, in dialogue with the audience, do these works truly come alive.” The lively discussions and exchanges with the artist extended from BlueClub Collector's Reception to the Opening Ceremony. We are deeply grateful to all who joined us for this intellectually and emotionally enriching Saturday afternoon. No distance is too far when art connects us!
