Cao Jigang (China, b. 1955) born in Beijing, graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1984 and was awarded the Silver Prize at the 9th National Art Exhibition of China. Currently lives and works in Beijing.
In this paper exhibition, Cao presents a new body of paper-based works—distinct from his renowned tempera minimalist landscapes—revealing a fresh, experimental and an alternative facet of his artistic vision. Working with traditional Anhui Xuan paper, Cao brings the classical Chinese landscape concept of the “Three Distances” (high distance, level distance, and deep distance) into dialogue with contemporary structural aesthetics, extending paper from a two-dimensional plane into layered, sculptural depth. Through cutting, stacking, and joining Xuan paper, he employs abstract, rational, geometric forms—symbols of certainty—to interpret the perceptual, aesthetic, and mutable spatial sensibility embodied by the “Three Distances.” Across a series of three works, he articulates multiple shades of white Xuan paper—some collected over years, others created on site—are used to foreground the medium’s distinctive qualities: archival longevity, resistance to aging, a non-reflective surface, delicate fibrous softness, diffusion, and natural bleeding. Respecting the paper’s irregular edges, Cao reduces manual intervention to a minimum, allowing the material to lead. The result is a quiet concentration and enduring resonance—subtle, unassuming, and deeply rewarding on prolonged viewing.
