(Germany, b. 1969)
Martina Ziegler (Germany, b. 1969) currently lives and works in Germany. She studied Liberal Arts at International University of Applied Sciences for Art and Design in Cologne, and later pursued Visual Communication at University of Applied Sciences, Düsseldorf. Ziegler is known for her distinctive concepts of "Crossover Painting" and "Metafoto," which merge analog painting with digital translation techniques to create a unique and recognizable artistic vocabulary. Her works have been exhibited in cities such as Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Essen. She is a member of the Association of Düsseldorf Women Artists e.V.
In 2015, she developed the concept of Multiple Portraits. At the heart of her "Crossover Painting" lies a shared pursuit found in both art and advertising—distinctive conceptual originality. Her creative process begins with naturalistic portrait painting, yet the faces depicted are composed of fragments from different individuals, symbolizing the multifaceted nature of identity. These paintings are then digitally deconstructed, with their "DNA" data—evoking the metaphor of human DNA—transformed and expanded to generate subsequent works. These hand-painted originals, referred to as the "Mother Matrix," give rise to numerous "multiples," which evolve further into "Abstract Portraits." The artist considers these works to be the "daughters" or "cousins" of the Mother Matrix. Not only do they establish relationships among themselves, but they also continue to "live" in a constant state of transformation—their DNA persists and develops in each new creation. As art critic Dr. Dagmar Täube remarked: “Ziegler’s ‘Multiple Portraits’ explore the complexity of human nature, combining painting, photography, and digital processing to forge an entirely new visual language. Just as an insect’s compound eyes capture images from multiple perspectives, she reconstructs female portraits through multi-perspective techniques, generating fresh viewpoints and layered meanings.”
